Understanding The Different Types of Waste

Why is it important to classify waste and what is the purpose of it?

As a country, we have a policy in place that seeks to reduce, reuse, recycle and recover energy.

In order to fulfill this requirement, it’s important that there be a distinct separation of waste at the source. This will save a lot of time and resources at the recycling end. Additionally, once waste has been sorted at the source different materials can be sent to the correct facilities for proper disposal. So, what are the different types of waste that exist?

The definition of waste -

For the longest time, every state had its own definition of waste. As a result, this led to different classifications and state laws regarding how to deal with the said waste.

However, one universal definition of waste that has been widely accepted across all states comes from the 1970 Environment Protection Act which says that waste is “any matter, whether solid, liquid, gaseous or radioactive, which is discharged, emitted or deposited in the environment in such volume, constituency or manner as to cause an alteration of the environment.”

A more recent definition from the 2018 National Waste Report defines waste as “materials or products that are unwanted or have been discarded, rejected or abandoned.”
